Design Perspective: Making Paperboard a Medium Between Architecture and Life

This project no longer uses paper-based materials merely as display boards or packaging, but transforms them into a comprehensive carrier integrating spatial structures, display interfaces, furniture forms, and artistic installations. The exhibition area uses natural-colored paperboard as its primary visual element, retaining the material’s natural texture and warm feel to create a simple, eco-friendly, and design-recognizable spatial atmosphere.
The design focus responds to the theme of “Beyond Architecture”: the space does not pursue the enclosed and heavy feel of traditional booths. Instead, through layering, interpenetration, openings, staggering, and combination, it creates an open structure resembling urban texture and living neighborhoods. Visitors can walk through, pause, observe, and interact among the paper-based structures, experiencing the transformation of design from an architectural scale back to the scale of everyday life.

Paper-Based Architecture: Modular Structures Creating an Urbanized Exhibition Space

Through large-scale paper-based modules and three-dimensional construction systems, the project establishes the overall spatial order and visual memory points of the exhibition area.

Paperboard Urban Facade System: The exhibition area features staggered paper-based walls and modular facades forming a city-like spatial backdrop. Walls incorporate openings, interlocking joints, layered relief, and embedded lighting to create architectural contours and a neighborhood feel, giving the booth strong structural recognition within the international exhibition hall.

Interlocking Spatial Construction: The paper-based structures utilize plug-in, layered, and modular assembly methods, reducing the need for complex hardware and on-site wet work. Walls, display racks, and display units can be flexibly combined, meeting exhibition display needs while demonstrating the lightweight, adaptable, and constructible nature of paper-based materials in spatial building.

Living Installations: From Design Display to Perceptible Everyday Experiences

The project integrates furniture, public installations, and artworks into the space, elevating the exhibition from mere display to an experiential living scene.

Paper-Based Furniture and Interactive Installations: The exhibition area features paper-based works including layered seating, wave-shaped tables, modular cabinets, and tree-like installations, allowing visitors to closely observe the material’s structure and detailed forms. Through lamination and cutting in different directions, the paperboard achieves load-bearing capacity and curved surface effects, showcasing the design potential of “replacing wood with paper.”

Lifestyle Display Scenarios: The exhibition integrates reading, rest, communication, product display, and art viewing within the same space, diminishing the traditional sales-oriented feel of the booth and enhancing the experience of lifestyle. Star-shaped installations, translucent rest pods, paper-based bookshelves, and artistic wall surfaces together create a natural, open, and inviting design environment where visitors can linger.

Industry Feedback

The OnDesign Local Cross-border Design “Source of Life” Themed Exhibition Installation used new paper-based materials to construct an international exhibition space that embodies a sense of architecture, everyday life, and artistry. It successfully transformed eco-friendly materials from auxiliary display elements into the core expression of the exhibition itself. Through its paperboard urban facades, modular structures, paper-based furniture, and interactive installations, the project showcased the cross-border capabilities of Chinese local design in material innovation, spatial creation, and sustainable concepts. Its lightweight, demountable, and recyclable implementation not only enhanced visual recognition and cultural expression in the international exhibition context but also provided a representative practical model for design exhibitions, lifestyle showcases, and green exhibition installation.
