Design Perspective: Turning the Atrium into a Continuously Renewable Urban Theatre

This project regards the shopping mall atrium as a public theatre that can be refreshed on an ongoing basis. Paper-based installations enable rapid scene transformation for different years and themes, ranging from giant insect sculptures and cactus forests to festive lanterns, cloud hangings, colorful island landscapes and interactive seating. Every installation revitalizes the commercial space with bold colors and exaggerated forms.
The design maximizes the high-ceiling vertical space to form a composite display system consisting of overhead hanging art, ground landscapes and restful interactive zones. Visitors can take photos, relax and interact up close on the ground floor, while enjoying panoramic overhead views from upper levels. Far more than mere decoration, the art installations become core assets to draw foot traffic, extend dwell time and generate social media buzz.

Aerial Wonders: Oversized Sculptures Create Iconic Visual Landmarks

Leveraging the atrium’s vertical volume, giant paper art sculptures and suspension systems deliver eye-catching visuals visible from afar.

Giant Paper Insect & Plant Installations:
Oversized paper sculptures of insects and cacti hang from the atrium ceiling. Dramatic proportions and vivid colors break conventional spatial scales. Layered, plug-in and custom-cut paper panels balance sculptural solidity with lightweight elegance, forming instantly recognizable mall landmarks that attract attention from a distance.

Festive Themed Suspension System:
Custom hanging sets including lanterns, auspicious clouds, stars and blossoms are produced for various festivals and campaigns. Lightweight paper materials meet safety standards for high-altitude display while allowing fast theme swaps to keep the atrium fresh and festively decorated year-round.

Ground Interactive Zones: Transforming Decor into Usable Commercial Spaces

Complementing overhead sculptures, ground landscapes and interactive facilities boost visitor engagement and lengthen stays.

Themed Islands & Green Landscapes:
Colorful geometric islands, lawn platforms, plant sculptures and miniature scenic features divide the open atrium into gathering, photo and event zones. Layouts balance circulation flow and visual depth to naturally encourage shoppers to pause and linger.

Paper Interactive Seating & Family-Friendly Props:
Colorful benches, low interactive installations and child-safe amenities integrate resting, photo opportunities and parent-child play into the art display. Soft, lightweight and highly moldable paper materials flexibly support commercial events, kids’ activities and seasonal promotions.

Industry Feedback

The successive atrium art installation series at Jiatinghui Commercial Plaza Shanghai establishes a dynamic, memorable public space identity via regularly updated paper art. Combining large overhead hanging sculptures, ground interactive landscapes and seasonal themed props, the project elevates the atrium’s visual appeal, family engagement and social sharing value.
Its lightweight, detachable and recyclable paper installation system satisfies the frequent renewal demands of retail venues, offering eco-friendly, flexible and highly creative new solutions for shopping mall atrium decoration.
