Design Perspective: Bringing the New Year City into the Commercial Atrium

This project uses an “urban architectural cluster” as its core visual, transforming the commercial atrium into a miniature city filled with New Year atmosphere. The staggered building facades, red-and-white hot air balloons, festive window displays, street storefronts, and Christmas trees together form a layered cityscape, allowing customers to experience the festive feeling of strolling through city streets within the shopping mall.
The design focus was on translating two-dimensional hand-drawn architectural language into three-dimensional paper-based space. The building facades retain black line-drawn outlines, complemented by localized red lighting and festive decorations, giving the installation both an illustration-like lightness and the spatial volume required for large-scale visual merchandising. The overall visual is bright, warm, and rich in storytelling, suitable for photo opportunities and New Year theme communication.

Urban Scene Building: Paper-Based Architectural Cluster Creates a Festive Skyline

Through multi-layered paper-based building facades, the project shaped the visual core of the commercial atrium with a New Year atmosphere.

Paper-Based Urban Architectural Cluster: A large-scale urban architectural installation was placed in the central area of the atrium, using paper-based panels for facade shaping, modular assembly, and graphic output. Buildings of varying heights, including towers, a belfry, street shops, and European-style architecture, are arranged in a staggered manner, creating a rich city skyline that enhances the spatial depth and visual appeal.

Hand-Drawn Line Art Architectural Facades: The building surfaces feature black hand-drawn lines outlining details such as doors, windows, eaves, signs, and street scenes, combined with localized red lighting and the “Happy New Year 2019” theme graphics. This gives the paper-based architecture a sense of illustration, festivity, and brand activity recognition. It offers detail up close and a cohesive whole from afar, suitable for multi-angle photo sharing.

Festive Interaction: From Viewing Displays to a City Strolling Experience

The project not only emphasizes the visual appeal of large installations but also creates a commercial experience that encourages (lingering), interaction, and photo-taking through festive symbols and spatial flow design.

Hot Air Balloon and New Year Installations: Red-and-white hot air balloon shapes are placed above the space, creating a visual dialogue with the architectural cluster below and fostering an atmosphere of New Year travel, city parties, and festive celebrations. The floating quality of the balloons enhances the vertical dimension of the atrium space and serves as a key visual symbol for attracting foot traffic from a distance.

Neighborhood-Style Photo-Check-in Scenes: The area around the architectural cluster features window displays, storefronts, a Christmas tree, small street scenes, and festive lighting, forming (encircling) urban strolling path. Customers can stop and take photos at different nodes, creating an immersive city-walking experience.

Industry Feedback

The Shenzhen Coastal City New Year Visual Merchandising Urban Architectural Cluster project used paper-based materials to create a highly recognizable and atmospherically rich festive urban space, successfully transforming the shopping mall’s atrium into a New Year-themed scene with high social media check-in value. Through the combination of the urban architectural cluster, hand-drawn facades, hot air balloons, and festive lighting, the project enhanced the visual appeal of the commercial space and the customer dwell experience. Its lightweight, modular, and recyclable paper-based implementation also provides a more environmentally friendly, efficient, and creatively expressive solution for large-scale festive visual merchandising.
