Design Perspective: Revitalizing the Entire Atrium with a Sailing Vessel
Inspired by classic ocean-going sailing ships, this project translates themes of “voyage”, “exploration” and “journey” into immersive visual symbols within the commercial space. Suspended high above the atrium, the “Cathisaque” features an elongated hull, layered sails and intricate rigging systems, creating profound spatial depth and dramatic visual impact visible to visitors on every floor.
The design goes beyond crafting a large ship model; overhead suspension allows the sailing ship to truly “sail into” the mall. The installation delivers distinct viewing experiences from ground-floor low-angle views, mid-level horizontal sightlines and top-floor overhead perspectives, turning the whole commercial atrium into a three-dimensional stage that can be admired from all angles and widely shared online.
Nautical Landmark: Giant Suspended Sailing Ship Forms the Atrium’s Visual Focal Point
Main Giant Sailing Vessel Installation:
A huge suspended sailing ship hangs at the heart of the atrium. Paper-based materials form the hull outline and structural frame, complemented by dark hull surfaces, delicate portholes and deck details that faithfully replicate the silhouette of a classic ocean-going ship. Massive and highly recognizable, the vessel serves as the most eye-catching visual anchor of the entire mall.
Multi-Layer Sails & Rigging System:
Layered canvas sails, masts and dense rope rigging enhance the authenticity and vertical grandeur of nautical craft. From various viewpoints, the unfurled sails evoke the dynamic imagery of sailing forth against the wind, endowing the static installation with vivid storytelling and theatrical spatial tension.
Spatial Scenery: From Single Sculpture to Immersive Commercial Experience
Multi-Floor Viewing Circulation:
Suspended centrally in the high atrium, the ship can be viewed up close from horizontal walkways, escalators and distant overhead from upper floors. Multi-angle viewing sustains continuous foot traffic appeal and encourages visitors to linger, take photos and share content on social platforms.
Nautical Themed Atmosphere Creation:
Combined with the spacious open atrium, the sailing ship naturally stirs associations of adventure, exploration and freedom. Its dominant spatial presence transforms an ordinary commercial void into a public venue with both art gallery and festive exhibition attributes, strengthening the department store’s unique thematic identity.
